芸術の秋 ～ドネゴールの秋～

毎年10月最初の土日にはドネゴール県のGlentiesにてFiddlers Weekendが行なわれる。

今年で33回目を迎える歴史ある行事。

 

ダブリンから車で片道４時間。アイルランド北西部にある果て、ドネゴール県。

まだ日も昇らない真っ暗なダブリンの早朝に出発して、一時的に北アイルランドに入って抜けると、辺りの風景がツイード色に変わってきた。

 

そろそろドネゴール県だ。

このFiddler's Weekの目玉は、Masterclassおよび昼夜にわたって行われるセッション、

それにドネゴール出身のフィドラーによるコンサート。

 

Masterclassは2日間それぞれ1時間半にわたって行われた。

３クラスのうち、私はAdvanced classに入り先生はこの地域におけるフィドルの第一人者であるMick Brown氏。

１クラス１０人ちょっとでこぢんまりとしており、ドネゴール出身の人もいれば北アイルランドのベルファストから来たり、南部のティッペラリー県から来たり、私みたいにダブリンから来ている人がいる。

 

ドネゴール県の音楽はスコットランド音楽の影響が強く見られると言い、

スコットランド音楽発祥のリズムジャンルであるHighlandがよく弾かれる。

また、私の大好きなHornpipeも多く弾かているようだ。

ドネゴール音楽はテンポも早いし、音階も広くて弾きごたえがあるのだけど、

聴き心地は自分の好みドストライク！なアイリッシュ音楽。

どれも耳障りのいい柔らかい曲。

楽譜なんてなくて、完全に耳で聞いて習うスタイル。

今夏のｻﾏｰｽｸｰﾙでてこずったこの方法も次第に慣れて来ていると実感。

 

ただでさえレッスン当日にダブリンから車で来たことに驚かれたのに、

私にはさらにクレイジーなアイディアがあった。

それは朝のMasterclassが終わってから10km離れた街Ardaraで個人レッスンを3時間受けること。

なんてストイックなんだろう、自分って・・・

自分の今の課題がわかってて、習いたいことがはっきりとしているから、

先生のAoife Feeney氏にこれやりたい！と要望。

 

・基本の確認（特にボーイング＝運弓）

・テクニック（特に重音、スライド）

・リズム（ReelとHornpipeをもっと自信もって弾けるようになること）

・ドネゴール地域に独特な弾き方

 

因みに、週末レッスンは基本的に10時～12時、13時～15時（要相談）で料金は130EUR。

詳細はThe Donegal School of Traditional Irish Musicへ。繁忙期はグループレッスンが基本だが、

時期によって個人レッスンでも同じ料金・時間帯で受けられる。

 

2日目も同様に朝1時間個人レッスン、1時間半Masterclassに再び3時間個人レッスン...という予定だったけど、まさかの先生の方がダウンしてしまい、結局2日目キャンセルで、ありがたいことに今回は無料でいいよと言われた。

夜のセッションやコンサートにも行ったのだけど、

ドネゴールの音楽は、リズムなのか速さなのかそういう曲なのか、そういう要素が組み合わさって聴いていると模様が見えるような音楽。こんな表現力たっぷりの音を紡げるようになりたい。

アイリッシュ伝統音楽の祭典 Fleadh Cheoil in Sligo

最近、アイリッシュ音楽ネタだかりだが、今回も懲りずに音楽ネタ。

8月9日(日)〜16日(日)までスライゴーにて年に一度のアイリッシュ伝統音楽最大の祭りFleadh Cheoil(フラー・キョール)が行われた。

Recently I am always posting articles about Irish music, but forgive me; I’m posting another one!

The biggest annual Irish traditional music event, the Fleadh Cheoil, was held in Sligo from Sunday 9th to Sunday 16^th of August.

 

2年ずつ持ち回りでアイルランド各地の都市、街がこの最大の祭典を受け持つ。 

去年と今年はアイルランド西部の街、スライゴーにて行われ、今年は40万人もの人を動員した。

毎日街の至る所で子供たちや大人が路上でバスキングをしたり、夜はパブでのセッション、また期間中には1週間の楽器別・レベル別ワークショップやプロによるコンサート等が行われた。

 

Towns and cities around Ireland take turns for two years to host this big event.

This year as well as last year Sligo City took responsibility to hold the Fleadh, and it is said that 400,000 people visited there.

From dawn to dusk, buskers young and old created a festive atmosphere in the small, old city.　In addition to the daytime sessions, you could easily find pubs with good music. Also, there were one-week-workshops catering for different instruments and players’ levels, and people could also enjoy concerts by professional trad groups such as Danu.

中でも大会の目玉の一つは、小学〜高校生(一部大人の部もあり)が出場するCompetition。

そもそもアイルランド伝統音楽は人と競争するものではなく、人から人を通じて地域の生活と共に自然と息づくもの、と競い合うことに好意を示さない人もいる。

しかし、家族の中で音楽を日常で奏で合う文化が現在でも盛んな西部やそれほど強くないアイルランド東部、また他の地方の子供たちにとってのモチベーションとなる大会であり、日頃の腕前を披露する場となる。また、このコンクールで優勝した人は今後のキャリアに大きな影響を及ぼし得る機会でもあり、実際優勝OB,OGは国内外で活躍している。

 

One of the main events was a competition where musicians from the ages of 5 to 18 (sometimes over 18) would enter. Some people say that Irish traditional music should live naturally with local life, between people not competing with each other.

However, the competition can be a strong motivation even for those who are not from strong music regions, such as the east of Ireland. It is a stage for students to show (sometimes show off?) their music and its skills.  Moreover, any musician who successfully wins this all Ireland traditional music competition once, can see their music career broaden so widely.  Actually, many ex-winners are now playing not only nation-wide but world-wide after winning this influential event.

 

スライゴーの街に着くと、早速、街角に立てば昼間のわりとまだ昼間で静かなはずの街に同時に4つのセッションが聞こえた。

Shortly after we arrived at Sligo City, when standing up at the corner of a street we could hear four different sessions at the same time even though it was still mid day.
 

 

小さい頃にこうして夏休みを使ってアイルランド伝統楽器に触れるアイルランドの子供たち。

大学生になるころにはいろんな音楽に触れてアイルランド伝統音楽から離れる人もいるだろう。でも、私は結局こうした人たちはおじさん、おばさんになってからまた伝統音楽に戻ってくると信じている。子供のころにその血に染み込んだ上、まわりの友人がやってるからセッション一緒にやるか、というように輪を描くように波及していくのでは？アイルランド伝統音楽の底力を感じる。

 

Children in Ireland absorb Irish traditional music during summer vacation from an early age. When they grow up, some people might take a break from trad music and start learning different music genres. However, I believe that many of those who quit trad music at a young age eventually return to it when they are older.  As they have absorbed trad music when they were young, it’s in their blood.  Also, they will enjoy sessions with their friends from childhood. I think this is the potential of Irish traditional music.

Ceili Dance

さーて、コンクールの時間！

まずは、初めてCéilí(ケーリー)という伝統ダンスを見る。8人のグループで踊る。

リバーダンスのように基本足のみを使って踊るダンス。

伝統音楽はケーリーと共に演奏され、音楽と同様ダンスもセットパターンがあるようでその展開の仕方が音楽と似ていた。もともとダンスは音楽と共にあり、音楽はダンスと共にあると実感。

Now, it’s time for the competition!

First of all, I saw a Céilí dance for the first time. Usually, they dance in a group of 8 people.  Similar to contemporary Irish dance, they danced only with their feet.

Irish music was originally played for Ceili dancing. Like music, it seemed that dance had certain set patterns.  I found out that music and dance live together in Ireland.

 

 

雰囲気もつかんだところで、まずはハープのコンクール会場へ。

15-18歳のスローエアの部で大学の講義場の階段教室で行われる。

出演者は他の楽器と掛け持ちで出ていることも多く、適当な時間に来て、自分の演奏が終わったらすぐ出て行くという演奏者にとって負担の少ないコンクール。

音質とか、弾き方とか、表現の仕方とか人により個性があって面白かった。そして、あまりに心地が良くてお昼寝zZz...

After tasting a bit of the atmosphere of the Céilí dance, I headed for a competition for the harp (slow air/Age:15-18 years old). Most competitors played other instruments, so competitors showed up basically anytime within the designated times and played the harp.  After finishing playing, they tended to leave soon, which it seems let students feel less stress or burden when playing.  Feeling relaxed, I enjoyed finding each persons’ different styles, sounds, tunes, the way they played and their expressions. In the end, I took a really comfortable nap in the competition venue while listening to the ‘live harp concert".  

心地よい居眠りを誘うSlow Airハープ。

そして、お次は市内の美術館のシアターを会場にして開かれたフィドル15-18歳の部。

到着したころは1時間も時間が押していて、まだスローエアの部の最終演奏者が弾いているところ。その名の通り、かなりスローでテクニックを入れつつ確実に弾いている感じ。

I moved to a museum theatre in Sligo city to listen to another competition, the fiddle (Age:15-18 years old).  When I arrived at the venue, I found out that the previous fiddle competition (slow air/Age:15-18 years old) was behind time by an hour.  The last competitor was playing.  Literally, she was playing slowly and playing steady with some amazing techniques.

 

ほどなくして、普通の演奏の部が始まる。

圧倒的だった・・・！指の細やかな動き、音と共に風が吹いてきそうだった。

驚くべきほど早い装飾音符や美しいハーモニーを奏でる重音。

この瞬間に照準を合わせた若きフィドラーたち。このためだけとは言わないけどこの瞬間に輝くために練りに練られたパフォーマンス。贅沢な時間だった。１人あたり結構長めの曲を３曲弾いたため、次のDanúによるコンサートが待っており２人しか聴けなかったけど、素晴らしい作品を見たという感じだった。

Shortly afterwards, the normal competition began. 

I was so overwhelmed!!! How fast they used their fingers! I felt as if the wind was blowing along with their notes.  What I was impressed with the most was their fast finger movement for ornamentations and beautifully harmonised double stops.

The young fiddlers conditioned very well for just several minutes in this special annual competition.   I don’t think they practice only for that, but they must practice so much to shine this moment. It was such a brilliant time.

I could only listen to two students play because it took several minutes for one person to play three tunes, and I had to rush to a concert by Danú, the world-famous musicians. However, listening to their amazingly beautiful work satisfied me.

 

 

 

パブが密集しすぎてセッションを選ぶのも一苦労。

２日目になって、セッションに入ったり、道端でバスキングをすることにした。

初バスキング！２人カップルに私。初めて組むため、お互いの共通の曲を探り探り入れ、

なかなか知っている曲がないと悟った時、国営放送RTEの取材クルーが来た。

そして、取材したい、と・・・！

３人で急いで共通の曲を探し、Inis Oirrを弾くことになった。

見る見るうちに目の前に半円を描くように群衆ができた。弾き終わると拍手がもらえる。

気持ちがよかった。２回撮って、インタビューを受けた。

インタビューでは、何を答えているのかわからなくなり気の利いたことは何も言えなかったのだけど、よい経験に。ただ、オンエアされるのが怖いな。。。

On the second day, we joined sessions in pubs and hotels, and we were busking on the street.

It was my first time to busk!  As friends of mine, a couple, had more common tunes, we were struggling to find our common tunes.  When we found out we did not have many tunes in common, a national broadcast TV crew, RTE, approached us. 

 

And…they said they would like to record our play!

 

We struggled more to find a tune in common.  We ended up playing a tune called Inis Oirr, which is one of my favourite tunes. 

 

In two seconds, the crowds formed a big semicircle.  When we finished playing, clapping followed us.  I had a nice feeling, a mix of excitement and nervousness.  We played twice and I had an interview with one of the RTE crew members. 

I did not know what I had been answering to the questions, or how I was managing to answer them.  Though I was not sure whether I could say something nice, it was a great experience for me.

I’m afraid to see myself in the TV, though… 

 

 





取材を入れて1時間程度で約10ユーロを稼いだ。

１人あたり３ユーロちょっと。３ユーロにこんなに重みがあるなんて思いもしなかった。

We earned around a tenner in an hour.  We split it and got around 3EUR per person.  I didn’t know until that time how much 3 euro was worth.

レベルの高い演奏を見聞きして、

実際に初めて道端で群衆に囲まれて弾いたフィドル。

It was great to see and listen to high-standard music throughout the Fleadh and also I had a lovely experience to play the fiddle in front of the crowds on the street.

 

インプットとアウトプットのバランスがなんとも心地よい初Fleadh経験になった。

My first Fleadh felt like a good balance between input and output, and a really pleasant experience.

アイルランド音楽サマーキャンプ Scoil Acla/ Irish music and culture summer camp Scoil Acla

アイルランド最大の島、メイヨー州のアキル島にて1週間のアイルランド音楽のサマーキャンプに参加してきた。
I participated in a week long Irish summer music school in the largest offshore island in Ireland, Achill Island, Co. Mayo.

アイルランドでは7,8月にかけて国内各地にて伝統音楽・ダンスや言語を中心としたアイルランド文化継承のためにサマースクールが開かれている。
メイヨー州が私のお気に入りで、メイヨー州であるスクールに行きたい！と思って1週間の休暇を取って参戦。
There are many other summer schools around Ireland between July and August to inspire in new generations a love for Irish culture such as traditional music, dance and language.
County Mayo is my favourite county in Ireland, so I had been dreaming of joining a summer school in Co. Mayo. This is why I ended up taking the chance at last to go.

 

サマースクールの中でもScoil Aclaは歴史がある方で、今年で30周年を迎えた。
月〜金曜の毎日10時から13時まで楽器ごと、レベルごとにミュージックワークショップ(因みに今年は30周年特別価格で割引かれ、参加費は75ユーロ)があり、他に籠編み体験やセッション等が行われた。
Scoil Acla celebrated its 30th anniversary this year and it is one of the longest summer schools in terms of its history amongst other summer music camps in Ireland.  From Monday to Friday, we had workshops in the morning between 10am and 1pm, divided depending on music instruments and grades (by the way, the cost of the whole week was only 75 EUR this year due to the special anniversary discount, but normally it’s also a reasonable: 95EUR).
Apart from the workshops, we got a basket weaving class, and sessions day and night.

火曜日は籠編体験へ。

以前、Skerriesでのミュージックワークショップでのクラス分けのためのグレーディング・テストで大ミスを冒していた私。今回はレッスンが1週間とだけあって失敗は繰り返さない！と意気込み、かなり前から密かに練習していた。
When I went to other music weekend workshop in Skerries earlier this year, I totally messed up with the grading test on the first day.  I was determined not to do the same, so I secretly practiced and practiced several tunes so that I could play perfectly on the first day this time.

月曜朝、早めに行ってちょっと練習しようかと思っていたら、クラス分け担当のJohnに適当な質問を受けただけであっさりとクラスを指定される。
内心、アレ！？
クラスに入ってから、ちょっと曲弾いてみて！と言われて1人ずつ弾いてみる。
まわりは老若男女問わず2-3年の経験者。
そしてあくまでも本人の意思を尊重するようで、もう1つレベルの高いクラスに行きたい！と全員が弾き終わった時点で願い出た。
残りの半分をPaddy Ryan率いる6レベル中上から2番目のクラスへ。
進度や技術面でもクラスかな！と思った。
でもネックとなる人物がひとりいた。あるおじいちゃん、、、
耳で聴いてなかなかうまく弾けないこのおじいちゃんのためにPaddyもほぼ1対1でつき、
私含め残りの19人は、「・・・」という感じ。みんなが見守っていた。と同時に「1週間どうなるかな」と内心感じていた。

On Monday, I arrived at the lesson venue a bit early because I was intending to practice. However, a teacher who would carry out the grading, John, showed up and allocated me a class after only a second, after asking me some questions, not by letting me play. I was like “whhhatt?!”.
In the class, the teacher, another John, asked us to play some short tunes, so we, around 20 students, played one by one in front of him. Everybody except me had been learning the fiddle over two years.  It seemed the teacher respected our wishes, so I asked the teacher to upgrade and let me move to other class. I joined the second highest class out of six taught by Paddy Ryan. I thought it was suitable class for me in terms of grade and technique I could apply. However, there was one ‘outstanding’ person in our group.  He was an old lad.  Paddy tried to teach him one by one, as he could not get tunes by learning by ear.  During that special one to one lesson time, other 19 students including myself had to wait to pass the time peacefully.  At the same time, I asked myself what it would be like this week.

Keem のビーチへ。

火曜、まだ私は迷っていた。
あのおじいちゃんはまだいるのだろうか。。
せっかくなら、一番上のクラスを見てみたい。。。ということで1日、Liam O’Connorのアドバンスクラスへ。
Atlantic Roar、John Kelly’s ReelそしてPaddy in Londonの合計3曲習った。
最後まで楽譜も何も配られない。
ただ耳でインプットして、その場で即座にアウトプットする。
この過程がみんな恐ろしいほど早くて、すぐに重音やロール、カットといった装飾も自在に入れている。普段、耳で習うことに慣れていない私は、完全置いてきぼり。
やりきれない悔しさが残る。と同時に、いつか到達したい領域が見えた。
明日からもここで踏ん張ろうと思ったが、今回は背伸びをしても届かない領域があることがわかっただけで収穫、とわりきってPaddyのクラスへ戻ることに。

On Tuesday, I was still like in a puzzle.
I was wondering whether that old guy was still there.
As I was curious how advanced the Advance class would have been, I upgraded further to the highest grade class, whose teacher was Liam O’Connor. He taught us three tunes that day: Atlantic Roar, John Kelly’s Reel and Paddy in London. Even after the end of the lesson, no music sheet was handed out. Simply enough, we input by ear and output immediately. I was really overwhelmed by the students in the class, because the process they absorbed music was crazy quick, and also they freely applied ornamentations such as double stops, rolls and cuts.  I have not gotten used to learning by ear, so I was way behind compared to others. I wished I could have done better, but I could see the next level I would like to reach soon.
One option was to straggle here from the following day like that day, but I chose to take the other option; that is, to go back to Paddy’s class. I thought it was meaningful to just notice that there was a level I could not reach even though I tried to touch it.

一方、そのPaddyのクラスから例のおじいちゃんが追い出され、1つ下のクラスへ行ったとの朗報(？)。
Meanwhile, I got the latest (good?) news that the old man had been thrown out from Paddy’s class, and joined the lower grade lesson.

島では、羊も柵のない所で放し飼い。

水曜、何事もなかったかのようにPaddyのクラスに戻った。3日目にしてやっといるべき場所がわかった(遅)。
昨日やった曲の楽譜も配られ、レッスン冒頭みんなが弾いている間に音源もゲット。このクラスでも1日3曲。でもやっぱ耳から学ぶ。みんな2-3回ずつフレーズを繰り返しただけでさっと全体通して弾けるのがすごかった。ここでも自分は置いてきぼり。2フレーズ目やったら一つ前のフレーズを忘れてしまうんだもの。わからないままレッスンが進んでゆく〜

On Wednesday, I came back to Paddy’s class as if nothing had happened. It was a bit late for the third day, but I finally figured out where to belong this week.
The teacher Paddy handed out the music they learnt previous day and I recorded tunes while others were playing.  In this class as well, we covered three tunes in a day. Of course, they learn by ear, too. It was amazing to find everybody could play immediately after they heard and repeated to play some phrases a few times. I could not follow them very well, because I easily forgot the previous bar while learning the second bar!! The lesson flew fast while I was struggling…

天と地が逆さま。

木曜、わからない場所をわからないと言えるようになった。例のおじいちゃんのこと、悪く言ってたけど明日は我が身。まわりの温かさに救われた。いろんな年代がごちゃまぜだったのだけど子供(中学生くらい)たちはものすごくたくさん曲を弾いてきているようだし、楽譜に頼らず耳で聴いて間違いを恐れず弾くから弾けるようになるのも早い！Paddyはアイリッシュ音楽の歴史家のような人。曲と曲の間にアイリッシュフィドラーのこととか地域によるスタイルのこととか教えてくれる。

Day 4- On Thursday, I could give a shout to Paddy that I had been confused a bit in certain parts of the tunes we were working on. I said something harsh about the old lad before, but the similar situation was about to occur at me!! However, other kind students helped me a lot. It was interesting to observe that especially children about junior school age seemed to have been playing hundreds of tunes and they were not afraid of making a mistake, so they were much faster to learn to play compared to older students in the class. The teacher Paddy was like a historian of Irish trad music. He taught us a lot inbetween about Irish fiddlers and some techniques which were different depending on regions in Ireland.

金曜、もう最終日。本当は土曜も2時間レッスンあって、その後クラスごとにステージに上がる発表会Open-air Concertがあるのだけど明日はダブリンで用事があるため泣く泣く今日のレッスン後に帰る。最後の3時間。耳で学ぶことに少しずつ慣れてきてPaddyの手を焼くことも少なくなってきた。Sligo地方のMountain Roadという本の紹介とその題名にもなった曲などを弾き、Foxhunter’s (Slip Jig)を〆に習い、終了！

On Friday, it was already the last day. Actually, there would be a two-hour lesson on Saturday and the open-air concert afterwards, where every classes and instruments played on stage. However, I had to head for Dublin with some other friends to make it to something else for the following day. The last three hours- I gradually got used to learning by ear and I had less time to make trouble for Paddy. We learned some tunes including a main tune from a tune book called “The Mountain Road” from south Sligo area. We called it a day with a lovely tune called Foxhunter’s Slip Jig.

毎日、表情を変えるAchill Island。

今回は他のアイリッシュ音楽を学ぶ人たちがどのくらいのペースで曲を吸収して行っているのか目の当たりにして刺激的だった。
サマースクールに出られるくらいのレベルまで1年2ヶ月で持ってこられたのはよかったけど、目標となる次に到達したいレベルが見つかったのも収穫。
今回のScoil Aclaではフィドルに関しては1クラス20人(アドバンスクラスは30名越え)もいたのが難点で、もっと個々へのより細かな助言があれば最高だったけれど。。。
Reflecting on one week workshop, it was stimulative to know how fast other Irish fiddle learners absorbed tunes. I had made efforts to some extent so that I could make it to the summer school in one year and two months. It was really meaningful to join, as I could find the higher grade I would like to reach next. Overall, the summer school Scoil Acla was fruitful and I really enjoyed. However, it could be better if they reduce the number of students per class, since we had at least 20 students (in advance class, there were even more than 30 people). In smaller classes, it would be possible for both students and teachers to interact and provide more individual tips and advice.

1つ下のクラスでその後大人しくやっていたようだが、レッスン中の身の上話が度を越しクラスメイトに冷たくあしらわれ(？)、木曜から姿を消したという。。。
なかなか面白い展開をもつ人だった。
A sequel to the story: The old man who was removed from the class (we did not really recognise nor do such things, though). It seemed he behaved well in the class at first, but he spoke about himself too much during the lesson. As his classmates treated cold (?), he had never shown up at the class since Thursday. He had an interesting circumstances around him over the week!

あぁ、今夏はもう終わりでもまた来年以降またぜひサマースクール行ってみたい！
次は、ドネゴールのフィドラーズウィークかアイルランド最大のクレアでのウィリークランシーかな。。。
今年、リサーチ後にExcelで一覧作ったため日程等アップデートする。
Though summer school season is going to end soon, I definitely would love to participate in summer music camps next year onwards. What’s next? Maybe my next target will be the fiddlers week in Donegal or the biggest Irish music summer school, Willie Clancy in Co.Clare? I am going to update the details on excel file that I made after some hard work and  research this year.

アイルランドのアイランド/ Islands in Ireland

島が好きだ。

I'm an islands lover.

限られた目に見える空間（＝島）があって、限られたほどの物があって、
限られた数の人があって、その中に日常がある。
There is an ordinary life on a visible limited area, which is an island; there are limited things and a small number of people.

そんな島国「日本」に生まれて「アイルランド」に住んでいるのだけれど、
アイルランドにもさらにいくつかの「島＝アイランド」がある。
ゴールウェイ県にあるアラン諸島。
主に３つの島から成り、今回群島の中で最も小さい島に渡った。
I was born in an island country, Japan, and I am currently living in another island, Ireland.
There are more islands in Ireland.  The Aran Islands in Co. Galway are consisted of three small islands.  I crossed the Atlantic Ocean to reach one of the smallest islands there.



アイルランド語が話されている地域、ゲールタクトに入った。

Inis Oirr（イニシア）島。
アラン諸島を構成するのは、世界遺産Dún Aonghasaを擁するInis Mór（イニシュモア）島、
真ん中に位置するInis Meáin（イニシュマーン）島、そして今回訪れたInis Oirr島である。
The name of the island was Inis Oirr in Irish. 
This is one of the Aran Islands, apart from Inis Mór, which has a world heritage site Dún Ainghasa, and Inis Meáin, which is located in the middle of Inis Mór and Inis Oirr.

アイリッシュ・フィドルを始めて間もない去年の夏、最初に足の裏からゾクッとするような曲、その名も「Inis Oirr」に出会ったのがことの始まりだ。フィドルの先生Claireによるととても美しい島なのだとか。今回はそんな「Inis Oirr」を追ってInis Oirrに来た。
I can trace the beginning of this journey to the time when I first started the Irish fiddle last summer.  My fiddle teacher, Claire, taught us one tune which name was Inis Oirr.  Since then, the tune has become one of my favourite tunes. Also, Claire told us the island was very beautiful and it would be worth landing on.  This is why, the lovely tune, Inis Oirr, lead me to go to Inis Oirr.



Inis Oirr島の玄関口

アイルランド西部の街Doolinからフェリーで30分。
本島から約8km離れた孤島へ向かう。
出発からまもなく、小さなフェリーが上下に揺れる。
陸は見えているけど、海の道は果てしなく感じた。
史上最悪の船酔いになる直前に動かない地面に足を踏み入れた。ふぅ。
It took us 30 minutes by ferry to reach there from Doolin, a cheerful western town. We headed for the isolated small island which lies approximately 8km from the main island.
Shortly after we left Doolin, the small ferry moved up and down. I felt the island was sitting far away though I could see the island. We finally landed on the thankfully unmovelable land before my seasick condition turned into something disastrous. Huh…

We did not have any concrete schedule on the island. 

島歩き、疲れたら休んで、夜はパブでセッション。
We just walked around the island, took a break when necessary, and enjoyed the music session at night.


パブの標識？

岩の上に生活が成り立っており、土や海藻で土地を固め、石垣を張り巡らせて海風から作物を守っている。島が小さいだけに区画の間隔も狭い。
Their whole lives took place on the island. People hardened the land by clay and seaweed, and built loads of stony fences so that they could protect the crops from strong wind blowing from the sea.  The intervals between the fences were narrow compared to other islands, as the size of the island was small.

人口250人に、スーパー（コンビニ？）1軒、空港1ヶ所、パブ3軒。
What there is on the island: 250 people, one supermarket(rather a convenience store), an airport, and three pubs!

当地新聞記者が訪れて島一番のビストロと言われるSouth Aran Restaurantにて海の幸の夕食。
日本人的にはカレイを塩だけで食べたいくらいだったけど、ここはアイルランド。
パプリカパウダー（？）と塩で素朴に味付けしたグリル・カレイを頂く。
We had dinner in the South Aran Restaurant, which is  said to be the best bistro on Inis Oirr.  As a seafood loving Japanese person, I wanted to eat the stir-fried flatfish simply seasoned by sea salt.  However, this is Ireland; We got locally caught fresh grilled whitefish slightly seasoned by paprika powder and salt. We enjoyed the food a lot anyway.

わざわざダブリンからフィドルを抱えてきた。
Inis Oirr島でInisOirrを弾こうと思って。
I brought my fiddle all the way from Dublin, as I was thinking to play Inis Oirr on the island Inis Oirr.
1軒目のパブ。
　アコーディオン奏者とギターと歌の若者、それに縦笛も横笛もBodhranも操るおじいさん。聞き入って様子を伺っていたら、リーダー格のおじいさんが近づいてきて直々「おい、ミュージシャンか。セッションに入って！」と。

In the first pub:
  An accordion player, a young guitar player and vocalist and an old man who could play whistles and Bodhran.  The old man, who turned out to be a session leader, approached us and said, “Hey, girls!! Are you musicians? Please join us in the session.” .
　じいさん「で、何弾く？」
　私「じゃあ、まずはOut on the Ocean。」
　多くの曲が２～３パートで構成されるアイルランド音楽。各パート２回ずつ弾いて、通しでまた２-3回セット弾く。でも、弾いているうちに何度弾いたかわからず、自分の柔軟性が試された。
  The old lad: “So, what are you gonna play?”
  Me: “Well, I will play Out on the Ocean.”
Irish music tunes are mostly consisted of 2-3 parts. We played double and continued 2-3 times per tune.  I messed up as I was confused to count how many times we played.

パブでセッションに参加

じいさん「で、次は何弾く？」

私「Inis Oirrを。」

じいさん「へ？何だって？Inis Oirr？そんな曲知らんぞ～。」

私「♪～（少し弾いてみる）」

じいさん「それ、さっき弾いた曲と一緒！」

一同「いやいや、それはInis Oirrだよ。」

The old man: “Then, what’s next?”

Me: “I will play Inis Oirr.”

The guy: “What’s that? Inis Oirr? I don’t know it!”

Me: “♪〜(I played a few phrases)”

The man: “?! It is the same tune as the previous one!”

Everybody: “No way! IT IS INIS OIRR!”

じいさんがノってくれないため、違う曲を選んで弾いた。よく知らない曲が多くなってきた頃に、目の前のギネスもなくなってきたため次のパブへ移動。
The old man was unwilling to know Inis Oirr, I chose other tunes and played.  When I found I the tunes were becoming unfamiliar and I was about to reach the bottom of my glass of Guiness, we moved to another pub.


島の浜辺。空の色によって水の色が変わる。

そして、2軒目。
　アイルランド伝統音楽の全国大会Fleadh Cheoilで優勝したというフィドルを弾く女性がいるよ、と島に来てから聞いていたため、楽しみだった。23時近くなったパブには人がポツリポツリいるだけだった。
　部屋の隅に若い女性3人が時折談笑しながらそれぞれバンジョー、ギターそしてフィドルを囁き合うかのように鳴らしていた。繊細な糸のような3色の音が繋がり合う。うっとりするような甘い音色だった。
In the second pub:
   I was looking forward to listening to music there, because I had heard after coming to Inis Oirr that a lady fiddler, who had won the national Irish music championship, Fleadh Cheoil, would be in the pub. It was already around 11pm. There were only a few customers left.
   We found three young ladies in the corner of the room. They sometimes cheated and played the banjo, guitar and fiddle as if they had been whispering with each other. The sound from these instruments made harmony as three delicate yarns were tied. It was a sweet sounds, completely  entrancing.

囁き合うような柔らかい音楽。

バンジョーとフィドルを弾くのは、聞けば姉妹という。
だからなのか絶妙な息づかいで音を奏でている。
全く知らない者同士が不調和音を奏でるセッションもいいけれど、仲良し同士でおしゃべりをするかのように奏でるセッション。
この島でのアイリッシュ音楽はここに暮らすコミュニティーと共にあることを実感した。
The persons who were playing the banjo and fiddle were sisters. Probably that is why they play and breathe in such perfect timing. I like the session where strangers play and mix up different tunes, but it was impressive to find a session as if close friends or family were chatting with instruments. I figured out that Irish music on this island was living together with its community.

　翌日、ぶらぶらと島内散策していると、島で採れる材料を使って作った工芸品を売る店に辿り着いた。
蔓を編んでバスケットにしたり、村の高齢女性たちが編んだセーターなどがあった。
On the following day, I found myself in a small shop where an island lady was selling handcrafts made of natural materials from Inis Oirr. She sold some baskets made of vines, and sweaters knitted by old ladies living on the island.

地元の手工芸品を売る店。

店主の女性と話をして、今日が日本の海の日だと告げるとそんな祝日があることに驚いていた。
そこで日本にあるInis Oirr島と同じ規模の島との地域間交流ができたらおもしろいとか、
Inis Oirr島に住んでいた日本人ジミーさんの話とか、
毎日、新聞は来るけど貨物は週3日という物流の話とか
短時間だったけど色々と話した。
その中で、どれほど島での暮らしは不便だろうと仮定していたけど、
実際にはそんなに不便ではないと言われたことに驚いた。
病気になっても、島内の空港からヘリでGalwayの空港の屋上に直接行けるし、船ではなくても本島へは島民価格で飛行機にのって行けるし、それからやっぱみんながみんなのことを知っているからという安心感もあって、とのこと。
When chatting with the shop keeper, she was so surprised to know that day was Japanese marine national holiday. We talked a lot in a short time: it would be interesting if we could have local cultural exchanges between Inis Oirr and islands in Japan which have a similar size and population. Moreover, she told me about a Japanese guy who was residing on the island, Jimmy-San.  Also, she told me about her life here: she gets newspaper everyday, but cargo reaches only three times in a week.  I premised how hard it would be to live on the island, but I was surprised to hear that the life here was not inconvenient. If people get sick, they can take off at the airport and land on the rooftop in a hospital in Galway City. It seems they can also catch a flight with some discounts for island residents. Most importantly, she feels relief because everybody knows everybody.

 フェリーの時間が迫ってきた。またあの船旅に堪えないといけないかと思うと少しつらくなったが、帰りは酔い止めを飲んで動かない地平線に視点を一点集中し、瞑想の領域で揺られた。
やっぱり、すごい揺れ方だった。
The time to leave waas approaching steadily.  I was worrying about the ferry trip back to the island, as I had to bear the tough journey again. The ferry was going up and down a lot. I took medicine to prevent seasickness, and I stared at the unmovelable horizon as if I had been on a meditation like monks.
　
ようやくモハーの断崖付近の岩壁に映る黒く長い影が見えた頃、安堵した。
I felt relieved when I saw the black long shades reflecting rocky cliffs on the surface of the water around the Cliffs of Moher.

本島から見える白い砂浜のあるInis Oirr島は、真っ青の海に映えていた。
荒波や強烈な海風をものともせず、これからもずっとそこに浮かんでいるのだろうか。
The view from the main land overlooking Inis Oirr with a white beach was shining in the blue ocean.  I wondered  whether the island is going to be floating from now on as it used to do, regardless of wild sea and intense sea wind.

島で出会った人も牛もそしてそんな環境が奏でる音楽も、生き生きとそこに存在している。
People and cows I met on the island, and even Irish music played are all existing lively there at the same time.

やっぱり、島が好き。
I found again, that I like islands.
