アイルランド音楽の愉しみ

３年にわたるアイルランドでの勤務も終わりを迎えようとしている。

It’s about to reach the end of my three-year-contract soon.

公私共に本当に充実した日々を過ごし、かなり濃密な日々を過ごせたおかげで、時によってはその場の空気感そのものをありありと思い起こすことができる。
My time in Ireland was really fulfilling, both at work and outside work. I can remember clearly the atmosphere and details of these days, because they were quality time.

中でも、２年目の初めにアイルランドの伝統音楽に出会ったことが私のアイルランド生活に彩りと勢いを与えてくれた。どこに生活のヒントが隠されているかわからないものだ。
Amongst all my experiences, encountering Irish trad music early in my second year made my life flourish and give me more passion in everyday life. We can never really tell where we will find life’s secrets.

気がつけば、本ブログが次第にアイリッシュ音楽ブログになっていったように、
今まで音楽面では到達したことのない深みにはまっていってしまった。
I found myself enthralled with music in a way I had never experienced before. As you can see, my Irish life blog unconsciously became an Irish ‘music’ blog in the end.

自分が本来好きだった「旅」を切り口に、地方色のあるアイルランド音楽を各地で愉しむ楽しみ方を知り、病みつきになっていった。
本来はダンスのための伴奏曲としての音楽であるが、その枠組みを越え、地域の人々の生活に根差した音楽そのものは美しい。
The fun of going on trips, which I loved from the beginning, was added to much more by enjoying local music sessions with its regional styles which were different from county to county.  The music trips deepened my interests enormously.

Irish traditional music was originally born as an accompaniment of dance, but it seems to me that its beauty stemmed from the real life of people living there, which is beyond the frame of dance tunes.

リズムや装飾音の入れ方、運弓の仕方も地方によって違いがある上、
弾かれている楽器も微妙に異なる。
Depending on the region, there are distinctions in the rhythm, the placement of ornamentations, and the ways of bowing.  In addition, the types of musical instruments differ as well. 

特にドネゴール地域では、セッションへ行けば８割方フィドルで残りはフルート、
クレア地域では、フィドルよりアコーディオンやコンサーティーナが優勢。そこへバウロンも加わる。
地域ごとの風景と音楽とが重なり、土地の魅力がぐんと大きくなる。
For instance, in a session in Co. Donegal, you will find 80 per cent of musicians play the fiddle, and the others might play the flute.  On the other hand, you will find more accordion and concertina players rather than fiddlers in Co. Clare.  Bodhran players can be more common there too.  The splendid scenery and music tell me where I am, and the characteristics of its region can be more obvious and attractive.

地方ごとの演奏方法の違いがベースとなり、熟達した演奏者になると各人の「自分のスタイル」が持てるようになってくる。
Meanwhile, as people notice the uniqueness of regional styles, they can each find/develop their own style.

アイルランド伝統音楽は、人から人へ「耳で学ぶ」のが正統な曲の学び方だが、レッスン中にはできるようになっても私の場合、長期記憶にはなかなかならなかった。１フレーズを思い出せても曲全体まではなかなか覚えられないのだ。そのため、レッスンやワークショップでは譜面がもらえればもらい、セッション等で耳にした曲はできる限り記録として譜面化する作業を行なうようにした。
Usually people learn by ear, but for me, my memory did not stay for a long time in my head. It was tough to remember whole tunes by listening to them just a few times.  I used to get music sheets as much as possible in lessons and workshops. Also, I tried to tape tunes in sessions and write down the music notation.

そうして２年弱でアイルランド中で出会った曲は（ちゃんとは数えていないが）約550曲（！）。
In this way, I collected around 550 tunes (although I did not count them all properly) in Ireland in less than two years.

こうして出会った曲が自分が歩いた道しるべともなる。
他の人が同じ時間をかけて国内を回ったらその人独自のレパートリーに出会うことになるだろうし、
趣向や訪れた地域、楽器、年代、セッション、ワークショップ等で出会う人たち、その寄せ集めが私のレパートリー。
These tunes are now like my own footprints.

If other people travelled and played around the country in the same length of time, they would meet different repertoires.  My repertoire reflects my preferences, and all the experiences I had in places I visited. It would have been different if I had travelled with different instruments, times, sessions, workshops and people.

２年弱アイルランドを駆け回り、耳で稼いだ楽譜、約550曲。

Travelling with Irish Music:

音楽と記憶は結びつく。
Music and memories connect with each other.

「秋の澄んだ寒い日に、暖炉の前で教えてもらった曲」とか、
「このときに通っていたグループレッスンで先生から教えてもらった曲」とか、
「セッションでおばちゃんがみんなの前で弾いてくれた素敵なHornpipe」とか、
「Donegalで15歳の女の子が先生のフィドルを試し弾きしたときに弾いた１曲」とか、
節々で「いいな～！これ弾きたい！」と思ったものを１つ１つ吸収していった。
There are some examples:
a tune I was taught in front of a warm fireplace on a chilly autumn day,
a tune my teacher taught me in a group lesson that I used to go to at one time in Dublin,
a lovely hornpipe a middle-age lady played solo in front of people in a session, and
a tune a 15-year-old Donegal girl played when she gave her teacher’s fiddle a try.

I absorbed tunes one by one when I felt I would love to play them.

地方を旅した記憶と音楽が重なり合う。写真と共に形に残したい。

あと１年あるんだったら、余計にアイリッシュ音楽まみれの日々になっていたことだろう。
でも、この続きはまた今度。
If I had one more year to spend in Ireland, I would be immersed even more in Irish music.  However, my journey will continue in the future.

アイルランドで得たどっしりとした原石を次は、日本で少しずつかみ砕いて「自分のスタイル」にしていき、磨いていきたい。次に繋がる人生の楽しみをアイルランドで得たことがこれからの自分にとって大きな糧になるだろう。
I would like to break down the dense gemstone that I got in Ireland and polish it in Japan to build my own style.  It will be a great contribution that I gained in Ireland to add to the joy of life in the future.

Russell Memorial Weekend

フィドルを車に乗せてのアイルランドの地方巡業も９回目となった今回、フィドル編最後を飾るのは、２月最終週に行われたアイルランド伝統音楽の都・クレア県にあるDoolinでのRussell Memorial Weekend。

Doolinに来るのもかれこれ５、６回目（色んな中継地点だったり）。
土日は午前中に２時間ほどフィドルのワークショップ（通しで２０ユーロかと思っていたら1日あたり、でワークショップにしてはちょっぴりお高め。）があるというので、それを目当てに早朝ダブリン発！
今年のチューターは、かの有名なKilfenora Ceili Bandでも活躍するフィドラー兼バンジョー兼ピアノを弾くマルチな才女。

参加者は初日が４人で、２日目は６人。
クラシック専門でアイリッシュ音楽を学びに来ているというドイツ人の友人もおり、
チューター２人のコンビネーションが絶妙。ドイツ人は助手みたいにされており、
コピー機も持参のため、楽譜のコピーをその場で頼んだり、子供の楽譜にABC譜をすぐ書くとか、
それぞれがいい役割で動いていてストンストンと息をつく間もない充実のワークショップ。
選曲は、知っている曲も多く、いかにもというダンスチューンが多かったのもクレア県だからなのか、Ceili Bank出身の人だからか、、、でもテクニックをボコボコ入れて来たり、容赦ないチューターの進めっぷりが私には合っていた。

Doolinの港からは、モハーの断崖がすぐそこに見える。

ワークショップ後、Davishという有名なグループが村内で演奏。
そのフィドラーのFrankie Gavin氏の演奏を聞きたくて、行ってみた。
「きれいすぎる」音楽が好みかどうかは別として、確かに「魅せる」力の高い人。
左手の指使いが巧みすぎて、４本の指がその長さや個々の特性に関わらず同じフォームを描いて動いている。

そして、夜はパブセッショーン！
今回は聴く専門の人になった。

２日目のワークショップが終わると、ゴールウェイ県方面へ北上した。
既に何度も訪れたことがあるエリアだが、改めて帰国前にバレン高原のあたりの風景を眺めたかったのだ。青空で、海も美しく海岸を走るのには最高の日！

アイルランド広しと言えども、他の地域ではないような風景。

こういう「地方」を旅しながら車に楽器を積んで回るのは、アイルランドでの最高の思い出の一つ。
淋しくなるな～。。。でも、もっと腕を上げてぜひまたアイルランドに帰ってきたい。

アイルランド伝統音楽ウィンタースクール/ Irish Trad Music Winter School

あけましておめでとうございます。
A Happy New Year!

アイルランドは、今年もひつじ年！？というか毎年。

アイルランドに来て３年目、最後の年に初めてアイルランドで年を越した。
クリスマス休暇明けの１２月２８日（月）から新年は元日まで５日間にわたってドネゴール県北西部でアイルランド伝統音楽のウィンタースクールが行なわれ、年越しを含めて参加してきた。
I spent the New Year holidays in Ireland for the first time since I moved here three years ago. There was an Irish trad music winter school in west Donegal after Christmas for five days from 28th December Monday to 1st January 2016.  I participated in this winter school and celebrated New Year there.

20年続いた前身となるFrankie Kennedy Winter Schoolから名前や運営が改まり、今回は2度目の開催となるScoil Gheimhridh Ghaoth Dobhair （アイルランド語で読み方わからない、誰か助けて！）。
This winter school, Scoil Gheimhridh Ghaoth Dobhair (I can never remember how to read it), celebrated its second year anniversary this time. The former school, Frankie Kennedy Winter School, finished 2 years ago after 20 years, and it is now re-named and re-formed.

ゲールタクトでは日常的にアイルランド語が使われる。

今回のスクールの中心地Gweedore（グウィドール）から生まれ、今や世界ツアーを行うトラッドグループAltan（アルタン）のヴォーカル兼フィドラーであるMairéad Ní Mhaonaigh （マレード・ニ・ウィニー）氏が中心となって行っていたのがFrankie Kennedy Winter Schoo。彼女の亡夫でベルファスト生まれのフルート奏者Frankie Kennedy氏を讃えるために始まった。
Originally, Frankie Kennedy Winter School had started to commemorate the Belfast native flute player, Frankie Kennedy.  The Winter School has been organised by a wellknown Donegal fiddler and singer from Altan, Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, the wife of the late Frankie Kennedy.

新生ウィンタースクール、２度目の今回はコンサートの他、４日間にわたるワークショップ（10:00-13:00月～木/ 通しで100EUR）や各種イベントが目白押し。

フィドルのワークショップは、初心者（１クラス）と中・上級クラス（５クラス）に分かれて行われた。
初日の28日は、私はダブリンでの仕事のためワークショップには出られなかったものの、グレードテストが行われたようで、クラスが決まった（といってもMairéadのクラス以外はレベルが曖昧？）。

In this newly reformed winter school, there were many events such as concerts and a four-day-workshop(it was ran between 10am-1pm for 4days/100EUR=good value!).

Our fiddle workshops were divided into two big groups: Beginner (1 class) and Intermediate/Advanced (5 classes).  I could not make it to the first day due to my work in Dublin, but it seemed the grading test had been performed to decide the classes (Except for Mairead’s class, its grade was not really obvious, though..).

今回のフィドル中・上級クラスの先生は次の通り。

Here is a list of the tutors for the intermediate/advanced level fiddle lessons;

• Bríd Harper （幼い頃から数々の全国大会で優勝。ﾌｨﾄﾞﾙの申し子とも言うべきか。/Won heaps of All Ireland championships since her childhood.  A heaven-sent fiddler. ）
• Cathal Hayden （北ｱｲﾙﾗﾝﾄﾞのﾃｨﾛｰﾝ州出身で、実家はパブ。/Born in Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Playing in a pub run by his dad.）
• Martin McGinley（Glentiesでのﾌｨﾄﾞﾗｰｽﾞｳｨｰｸのセッションで上手い人がいる！と印象的だった人物。今回先生をしていると到着日に判明してびっくり。/I had actually seen this impressive person at the fiddlers’ weekend in Glenties.  It was surprising to find on the first day of the lesson that he was one of the tutors.）
• Ciarán Ó Maonaigh（個人的には、去年のコンサートの模様を見て感激した人物。/I was really impressed by his playing on YouTube from the previous year.）
• Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh（前述のAltanの中心人物。/The main person in Altan as above.）

２日目から参入の私は、無駄にﾄﾞｷﾄﾞｷしつつもグレードテスト免除で自分がどんなレベルか説明。
お決まりの、「今はUpper-intermediateだけどadvanced levelに到達したい」の一言でMairéadがアイルランド語でむにゃむにゃ何か言った後、
「じゃ、Cathal （カハル）で」。
I felt unneccessarily nervous and found out I didn’t have to play a tune for the grading.  Instead, I exlpained what level I was in; as usual, I said to Mairead, “I’m upper-intermediate now, but I would like to reach the advanced level”. Mairead whispered something in Irish, and told me “Cathal(‘s class)!”

他のクラスはmax.10人と決まっていて実際はどこも8人くらいといったところだが、なぜかカハルさんのクラスは私を入れて4人（！）。
It was limited to 10 students per class at maximum, and on avarage, there were around eight students per class.  However, there were only four students in my class with Cathal! I was so glad to know there were less people compared to summer schools.

カハルは開口一番、「俺は教えないよ！」と。
今まで人に教えたこともないという。つまり、ついて来い、ということ。
At the beginning, our tutor Cathal told me that he would not teach us (What the hell!). He said he had never taught students.  In brief, I realised he wanted us to absorb as much as we could.

そして、前日にやった曲4曲（てかグレードテストあったのに、よく4曲もやったなぁ、、）を一通り通して弾き、Polkaを新しくやったところで「はい、休憩～」。
その後、１曲弾いては休憩（しかも結構長い）が頻繁に入り、他のクラスがレッスン中のへんな時間帯も我々はロビーでうろうろしていた。
しまいには、10時から13時までのところ３曲やって11時35分には「はい、終了～♫」と切り上げる始末。待って、早い。
The other students played four tunes which they learnt on the previous day (I was wondering how hard they worked on learning such a lot of tunes in one day, regardless of the fact they had a grading test on the same day!).  Then, Cathal ‘taught’ us one Polka and said to us, “it’s time for a cup o’ tea!”. Since then, we had some relatively long breaks every time we finished learning one single tune, so this system left us alone in an empty lobby, while the other students were in the lessons.

He let us go an hour and a half earlier than the schedule. Hold on, we still have plenty of time!

受付の人に「もう終わった！」とスモールトーク程度に言うと、
すごい勢いで席をはずし、どこからかカハルを捕まえてきた。
I had a quick chat with a guy in the reception about our lesson that finished that time.  He stood up quickly and dissappeared somewhere.  Two secons later, the guy caught Cathal and showed up again.


カハル「へ？で、何か用事？」
私「いやいや、、この人に「もう終わった！」と言っただけだけど・・・」
カハル「もっと弾きたいか？２人で練習する？」
私「ぜひ！」
カハル「あんた昨日いなかったしな～」
Cathal: “So, were you looking for me?”

Me: “Oh, no, no! I’ve just told this guy ‘the lesson has already finished.’ !”.

Cathal: “Would you like to play more with me?”

Me: “Oh, could we? That’ll be great!!”

Cathal: “Sure. As you were not here yesterday...”

ということで、30分程度極めて贅沢なﾌﾟﾗｲﾍﾞｰﾄﾚｯｽﾝをつけてもらった（ﾗｯｷｰ!!）。
目の下に黒いクマができていて、強面の彼だけど、レッスン中は本当に優しい。
しまいには、明日もやろうと言ってくれる（口だけだろうと、半信半疑な私。でも本当にやってくれた）。
Between the jigs and the reels, I had a very special and gorgerous private lesson (How lucky I was!!).

The teacher had dark rings under his eyes and looked a bit scary, but he was really kind.  In the end, he said to me we could have a short private lesson again on the following day (I was a bit doubtful about what he suggested, but actually he did what he said!).

フィドルに出会って、1年と8か月。
ABC譜システムや学び方のあれこれ既存観念との「違い」に所々戸惑いつつも、
アイルランド流のやり方がわかってきて、夏の経験があったから今ここまで来られていると感じると同時に、「これができるようになった」と自分の成長を自分で認識できることが不思議な感覚。
ある意味、ここまで自分って変われるんだ、と。
One year and eight months have passed since I first picked up the fiddle.

At first, everything, for instance the ABC system and the way to learn by ear, was unfamiliar to me.  And now, I have gradually understood how to learn Irish music; especially, joining the summer music school let my skills improve a lot.  I’ve got a strange feeling I could notice how much I improved.  In a sense, I realised I could change myself to some extent in a year and a bit.

サマースクールでは「耳で学ぶ(learn by ear）」に慣れず、ひとりだけ他の人たちとハーモニーを奏でている時もあったけど、今回は１フレーズ４回通したくらいで弾けるようになり、直前のフレーズも忘れることなくレッスン内の時間で他の人たちと同じように弾けるようになっていたのがびっくり。
（ただ、それでも地元っ子たちは、自分たちらしい弾き方でアクセントをすぐにつけられているから脱帽）。
At the summer school on Achill Island, I sometimes played “harmony” with others by chance because I did not get used enough to learn by ear.  However, this time it made me possible to acquire one phrase by playing only four times or something, and the following phrases without forgetting the previous bars.  By the end of each lesson, I managed to play with others without harsh “harmony”.  (None the less, local kids could play in their own ways with loads of ornamentations and nice rythms.  Hats off to them!)

私以外の３人は、１５歳の中学生（っていっても、日本人女子たちより見かけや態度がかーなり大人っぽい）。ﾌｨﾄﾞﾙ歴４年とかでもう人に教えていたり、学校の仲間たちとバンド組んでCDを出したり、ハイプロファイル。
今回感じたのは、コミュニティーが人を育てているということ。
The other three students in my class were all around 15 years old, secondary school students (However, they looked so mature for their ages compared to Japanese at similar ages in general). With only four years of experience on the fiddle, one of them had already taught people and released a CD with other players.  What I noticed during the winter school was that the community brought up people in here.

（今回のスクールを通じて初めてAltanの存在を知ったから何も大きなことは言えないけど）世界的に有名になった地元発のバンドメンバーが故郷で子供たちへ音楽魂を引継ぎ、次の世代が育っていっていくのだ。「伝統」が次の世代にわたっているのを間近で見ることは、本当にうれしい。
It was during the school that I first found out about Altan (so I can’t say anything magnificent), but it is amazing for a local band to pass on the spirit of music to the children in the area. It’s just beautiful to see the tradition was moving over to the new generations.
 
ドネゴールは、フィドルの伝統色が強い地域。
セッションでも８割方フィドルのときもあった。
地域による演奏法をRegional Styleと言い、Donegal Styleも存在する。
私はまだ地域性を聴き分けられる耳がないけれど、アイルランド音楽は言語みたいで、
地域の違いのあるアイルランド伝統音楽は、まるで方言のよう。
Donegal has a strong tradition in fiddle music.  There was no surprise if we came across a session where almost 80 per cent were fiddlers.

There are some regional styles in Irish music, and Donegal style is one of them.  I don’t have good enough ears to tell the differences between regional styles yet, but it seems to me that Irish music is like a language.  With some reginal styles, it is as if it has different dialects.

ドネゴールの風景は、独特。

ただ曲を覚えるだけではなく、これからこうなりたいという新しい目標ができた。
ドネゴールフィドラーの生きる化石（失礼か！？笑）Danny Meehan氏が講演で言っていたけど、
「自分のスタイル」を持つこと。
これがadvanced levelという私の次のステップへの課題でもある。
I found this winter school meaningful not only because I learnt some new tunes, but also I found a new goal to achieve in the next stage.

As Danny Meehan, a “living fossil-like person (Am I a bit rude? I hope not!)”, said in his lecture, we should have our own style.  This – to have my own fiddle style- is my next big aim to step up to the advanced level.

陽が当たると一層美しい。

アイルランド音楽サマーキャンプ Scoil Acla/ Irish music and culture summer camp Scoil Acla

アイルランド最大の島、メイヨー州のアキル島にて1週間のアイルランド音楽のサマーキャンプに参加してきた。
I participated in a week long Irish summer music school in the largest offshore island in Ireland, Achill Island, Co. Mayo.

アイルランドでは7,8月にかけて国内各地にて伝統音楽・ダンスや言語を中心としたアイルランド文化継承のためにサマースクールが開かれている。
メイヨー州が私のお気に入りで、メイヨー州であるスクールに行きたい！と思って1週間の休暇を取って参戦。
There are many other summer schools around Ireland between July and August to inspire in new generations a love for Irish culture such as traditional music, dance and language.
County Mayo is my favourite county in Ireland, so I had been dreaming of joining a summer school in Co. Mayo. This is why I ended up taking the chance at last to go.

 

サマースクールの中でもScoil Aclaは歴史がある方で、今年で30周年を迎えた。
月〜金曜の毎日10時から13時まで楽器ごと、レベルごとにミュージックワークショップ(因みに今年は30周年特別価格で割引かれ、参加費は75ユーロ)があり、他に籠編み体験やセッション等が行われた。
Scoil Acla celebrated its 30th anniversary this year and it is one of the longest summer schools in terms of its history amongst other summer music camps in Ireland.  From Monday to Friday, we had workshops in the morning between 10am and 1pm, divided depending on music instruments and grades (by the way, the cost of the whole week was only 75 EUR this year due to the special anniversary discount, but normally it’s also a reasonable: 95EUR).
Apart from the workshops, we got a basket weaving class, and sessions day and night.

火曜日は籠編体験へ。

以前、Skerriesでのミュージックワークショップでのクラス分けのためのグレーディング・テストで大ミスを冒していた私。今回はレッスンが1週間とだけあって失敗は繰り返さない！と意気込み、かなり前から密かに練習していた。
When I went to other music weekend workshop in Skerries earlier this year, I totally messed up with the grading test on the first day.  I was determined not to do the same, so I secretly practiced and practiced several tunes so that I could play perfectly on the first day this time.

月曜朝、早めに行ってちょっと練習しようかと思っていたら、クラス分け担当のJohnに適当な質問を受けただけであっさりとクラスを指定される。
内心、アレ！？
クラスに入ってから、ちょっと曲弾いてみて！と言われて1人ずつ弾いてみる。
まわりは老若男女問わず2-3年の経験者。
そしてあくまでも本人の意思を尊重するようで、もう1つレベルの高いクラスに行きたい！と全員が弾き終わった時点で願い出た。
残りの半分をPaddy Ryan率いる6レベル中上から2番目のクラスへ。
進度や技術面でもクラスかな！と思った。
でもネックとなる人物がひとりいた。あるおじいちゃん、、、
耳で聴いてなかなかうまく弾けないこのおじいちゃんのためにPaddyもほぼ1対1でつき、
私含め残りの19人は、「・・・」という感じ。みんなが見守っていた。と同時に「1週間どうなるかな」と内心感じていた。

On Monday, I arrived at the lesson venue a bit early because I was intending to practice. However, a teacher who would carry out the grading, John, showed up and allocated me a class after only a second, after asking me some questions, not by letting me play. I was like “whhhatt?!”.
In the class, the teacher, another John, asked us to play some short tunes, so we, around 20 students, played one by one in front of him. Everybody except me had been learning the fiddle over two years.  It seemed the teacher respected our wishes, so I asked the teacher to upgrade and let me move to other class. I joined the second highest class out of six taught by Paddy Ryan. I thought it was suitable class for me in terms of grade and technique I could apply. However, there was one ‘outstanding’ person in our group.  He was an old lad.  Paddy tried to teach him one by one, as he could not get tunes by learning by ear.  During that special one to one lesson time, other 19 students including myself had to wait to pass the time peacefully.  At the same time, I asked myself what it would be like this week.

Keem のビーチへ。

火曜、まだ私は迷っていた。
あのおじいちゃんはまだいるのだろうか。。
せっかくなら、一番上のクラスを見てみたい。。。ということで1日、Liam O’Connorのアドバンスクラスへ。
Atlantic Roar、John Kelly’s ReelそしてPaddy in Londonの合計3曲習った。
最後まで楽譜も何も配られない。
ただ耳でインプットして、その場で即座にアウトプットする。
この過程がみんな恐ろしいほど早くて、すぐに重音やロール、カットといった装飾も自在に入れている。普段、耳で習うことに慣れていない私は、完全置いてきぼり。
やりきれない悔しさが残る。と同時に、いつか到達したい領域が見えた。
明日からもここで踏ん張ろうと思ったが、今回は背伸びをしても届かない領域があることがわかっただけで収穫、とわりきってPaddyのクラスへ戻ることに。

On Tuesday, I was still like in a puzzle.
I was wondering whether that old guy was still there.
As I was curious how advanced the Advance class would have been, I upgraded further to the highest grade class, whose teacher was Liam O’Connor. He taught us three tunes that day: Atlantic Roar, John Kelly’s Reel and Paddy in London. Even after the end of the lesson, no music sheet was handed out. Simply enough, we input by ear and output immediately. I was really overwhelmed by the students in the class, because the process they absorbed music was crazy quick, and also they freely applied ornamentations such as double stops, rolls and cuts.  I have not gotten used to learning by ear, so I was way behind compared to others. I wished I could have done better, but I could see the next level I would like to reach soon.
One option was to straggle here from the following day like that day, but I chose to take the other option; that is, to go back to Paddy’s class. I thought it was meaningful to just notice that there was a level I could not reach even though I tried to touch it.

一方、そのPaddyのクラスから例のおじいちゃんが追い出され、1つ下のクラスへ行ったとの朗報(？)。
Meanwhile, I got the latest (good?) news that the old man had been thrown out from Paddy’s class, and joined the lower grade lesson.

島では、羊も柵のない所で放し飼い。

水曜、何事もなかったかのようにPaddyのクラスに戻った。3日目にしてやっといるべき場所がわかった(遅)。
昨日やった曲の楽譜も配られ、レッスン冒頭みんなが弾いている間に音源もゲット。このクラスでも1日3曲。でもやっぱ耳から学ぶ。みんな2-3回ずつフレーズを繰り返しただけでさっと全体通して弾けるのがすごかった。ここでも自分は置いてきぼり。2フレーズ目やったら一つ前のフレーズを忘れてしまうんだもの。わからないままレッスンが進んでゆく〜

On Wednesday, I came back to Paddy’s class as if nothing had happened. It was a bit late for the third day, but I finally figured out where to belong this week.
The teacher Paddy handed out the music they learnt previous day and I recorded tunes while others were playing.  In this class as well, we covered three tunes in a day. Of course, they learn by ear, too. It was amazing to find everybody could play immediately after they heard and repeated to play some phrases a few times. I could not follow them very well, because I easily forgot the previous bar while learning the second bar!! The lesson flew fast while I was struggling…

天と地が逆さま。

木曜、わからない場所をわからないと言えるようになった。例のおじいちゃんのこと、悪く言ってたけど明日は我が身。まわりの温かさに救われた。いろんな年代がごちゃまぜだったのだけど子供(中学生くらい)たちはものすごくたくさん曲を弾いてきているようだし、楽譜に頼らず耳で聴いて間違いを恐れず弾くから弾けるようになるのも早い！Paddyはアイリッシュ音楽の歴史家のような人。曲と曲の間にアイリッシュフィドラーのこととか地域によるスタイルのこととか教えてくれる。

Day 4- On Thursday, I could give a shout to Paddy that I had been confused a bit in certain parts of the tunes we were working on. I said something harsh about the old lad before, but the similar situation was about to occur at me!! However, other kind students helped me a lot. It was interesting to observe that especially children about junior school age seemed to have been playing hundreds of tunes and they were not afraid of making a mistake, so they were much faster to learn to play compared to older students in the class. The teacher Paddy was like a historian of Irish trad music. He taught us a lot inbetween about Irish fiddlers and some techniques which were different depending on regions in Ireland.

金曜、もう最終日。本当は土曜も2時間レッスンあって、その後クラスごとにステージに上がる発表会Open-air Concertがあるのだけど明日はダブリンで用事があるため泣く泣く今日のレッスン後に帰る。最後の3時間。耳で学ぶことに少しずつ慣れてきてPaddyの手を焼くことも少なくなってきた。Sligo地方のMountain Roadという本の紹介とその題名にもなった曲などを弾き、Foxhunter’s (Slip Jig)を〆に習い、終了！

On Friday, it was already the last day. Actually, there would be a two-hour lesson on Saturday and the open-air concert afterwards, where every classes and instruments played on stage. However, I had to head for Dublin with some other friends to make it to something else for the following day. The last three hours- I gradually got used to learning by ear and I had less time to make trouble for Paddy. We learned some tunes including a main tune from a tune book called “The Mountain Road” from south Sligo area. We called it a day with a lovely tune called Foxhunter’s Slip Jig.

毎日、表情を変えるAchill Island。

今回は他のアイリッシュ音楽を学ぶ人たちがどのくらいのペースで曲を吸収して行っているのか目の当たりにして刺激的だった。
サマースクールに出られるくらいのレベルまで1年2ヶ月で持ってこられたのはよかったけど、目標となる次に到達したいレベルが見つかったのも収穫。
今回のScoil Aclaではフィドルに関しては1クラス20人(アドバンスクラスは30名越え)もいたのが難点で、もっと個々へのより細かな助言があれば最高だったけれど。。。
Reflecting on one week workshop, it was stimulative to know how fast other Irish fiddle learners absorbed tunes. I had made efforts to some extent so that I could make it to the summer school in one year and two months. It was really meaningful to join, as I could find the higher grade I would like to reach next. Overall, the summer school Scoil Acla was fruitful and I really enjoyed. However, it could be better if they reduce the number of students per class, since we had at least 20 students (in advance class, there were even more than 30 people). In smaller classes, it would be possible for both students and teachers to interact and provide more individual tips and advice.

後日談。
Paddyのクラスから追い出されたおじいちゃん(※我々に追い出した自覚なし)。
1つ下のクラスでその後大人しくやっていたようだが、レッスン中の身の上話が度を越しクラスメイトに冷たくあしらわれ(？)、木曜から姿を消したという。。。
なかなか面白い展開をもつ人だった。
A sequel to the story: The old man who was removed from the class (we did not really recognise nor do such things, though). It seemed he behaved well in the class at first, but he spoke about himself too much during the lesson. As his classmates treated cold (?), he had never shown up at the class since Thursday. He had an interesting circumstances around him over the week!

あぁ、今夏はもう終わりでもまた来年以降またぜひサマースクール行ってみたい！
次は、ドネゴールのフィドラーズウィークかアイルランド最大のクレアでのウィリークランシーかな。。。
今年、リサーチ後にExcelで一覧作ったため日程等アップデートする。
Though summer school season is going to end soon, I definitely would love to participate in summer music camps next year onwards. What’s next? Maybe my next target will be the fiddlers week in Donegal or the biggest Irish music summer school, Willie Clancy in Co.Clare? I am going to update the details on excel file that I made after some hard work and  research this year.

アイルランドのアイランド/ Islands in Ireland

島が好きだ。

I'm an islands lover.

限られた目に見える空間（＝島）があって、限られたほどの物があって、
限られた数の人があって、その中に日常がある。
There is an ordinary life on a visible limited area, which is an island; there are limited things and a small number of people.

そんな島国「日本」に生まれて「アイルランド」に住んでいるのだけれど、
アイルランドにもさらにいくつかの「島＝アイランド」がある。
ゴールウェイ県にあるアラン諸島。
主に３つの島から成り、今回群島の中で最も小さい島に渡った。
I was born in an island country, Japan, and I am currently living in another island, Ireland.
There are more islands in Ireland.  The Aran Islands in Co. Galway are consisted of three small islands.  I crossed the Atlantic Ocean to reach one of the smallest islands there.



アイルランド語が話されている地域、ゲールタクトに入った。

Inis Oirr（イニシア）島。
アラン諸島を構成するのは、世界遺産Dún Aonghasaを擁するInis Mór（イニシュモア）島、
真ん中に位置するInis Meáin（イニシュマーン）島、そして今回訪れたInis Oirr島である。
The name of the island was Inis Oirr in Irish. 
This is one of the Aran Islands, apart from Inis Mór, which has a world heritage site Dún Ainghasa, and Inis Meáin, which is located in the middle of Inis Mór and Inis Oirr.

アイリッシュ・フィドルを始めて間もない去年の夏、最初に足の裏からゾクッとするような曲、その名も「Inis Oirr」に出会ったのがことの始まりだ。フィドルの先生Claireによるととても美しい島なのだとか。今回はそんな「Inis Oirr」を追ってInis Oirrに来た。
I can trace the beginning of this journey to the time when I first started the Irish fiddle last summer.  My fiddle teacher, Claire, taught us one tune which name was Inis Oirr.  Since then, the tune has become one of my favourite tunes. Also, Claire told us the island was very beautiful and it would be worth landing on.  This is why, the lovely tune, Inis Oirr, lead me to go to Inis Oirr.



Inis Oirr島の玄関口

アイルランド西部の街Doolinからフェリーで30分。
本島から約8km離れた孤島へ向かう。
出発からまもなく、小さなフェリーが上下に揺れる。
陸は見えているけど、海の道は果てしなく感じた。
史上最悪の船酔いになる直前に動かない地面に足を踏み入れた。ふぅ。
It took us 30 minutes by ferry to reach there from Doolin, a cheerful western town. We headed for the isolated small island which lies approximately 8km from the main island.
Shortly after we left Doolin, the small ferry moved up and down. I felt the island was sitting far away though I could see the island. We finally landed on the thankfully unmovelable land before my seasick condition turned into something disastrous. Huh…

We did not have any concrete schedule on the island. 

島歩き、疲れたら休んで、夜はパブでセッション。
We just walked around the island, took a break when necessary, and enjoyed the music session at night.


パブの標識？

岩の上に生活が成り立っており、土や海藻で土地を固め、石垣を張り巡らせて海風から作物を守っている。島が小さいだけに区画の間隔も狭い。
Their whole lives took place on the island. People hardened the land by clay and seaweed, and built loads of stony fences so that they could protect the crops from strong wind blowing from the sea.  The intervals between the fences were narrow compared to other islands, as the size of the island was small.

人口250人に、スーパー（コンビニ？）1軒、空港1ヶ所、パブ3軒。
What there is on the island: 250 people, one supermarket(rather a convenience store), an airport, and three pubs!

当地新聞記者が訪れて島一番のビストロと言われるSouth Aran Restaurantにて海の幸の夕食。
日本人的にはカレイを塩だけで食べたいくらいだったけど、ここはアイルランド。
パプリカパウダー（？）と塩で素朴に味付けしたグリル・カレイを頂く。
We had dinner in the South Aran Restaurant, which is  said to be the best bistro on Inis Oirr.  As a seafood loving Japanese person, I wanted to eat the stir-fried flatfish simply seasoned by sea salt.  However, this is Ireland; We got locally caught fresh grilled whitefish slightly seasoned by paprika powder and salt. We enjoyed the food a lot anyway.

I brought my fiddle all the way from Dublin, as I was thinking to play Inis Oirr on the island Inis Oirr.
1軒目のパブ。
　アコーディオン奏者とギターと歌の若者、それに縦笛も横笛もBodhranも操るおじいさん。聞き入って様子を伺っていたら、リーダー格のおじいさんが近づいてきて直々「おい、ミュージシャンか。セッションに入って！」と。

In the first pub:
  An accordion player, a young guitar player and vocalist and an old man who could play whistles and Bodhran.  The old man, who turned out to be a session leader, approached us and said, “Hey, girls!! Are you musicians? Please join us in the session.” .
　じいさん「で、何弾く？」
　私「じゃあ、まずはOut on the Ocean。」
　多くの曲が２～３パートで構成されるアイルランド音楽。各パート２回ずつ弾いて、通しでまた２-3回セット弾く。でも、弾いているうちに何度弾いたかわからず、自分の柔軟性が試された。
  The old lad: “So, what are you gonna play?”
  Me: “Well, I will play Out on the Ocean.”
Irish music tunes are mostly consisted of 2-3 parts. We played double and continued 2-3 times per tune.  I messed up as I was confused to count how many times we played.

パブでセッションに参加

じいさん「で、次は何弾く？」

私「Inis Oirrを。」

じいさん「へ？何だって？Inis Oirr？そんな曲知らんぞ～。」

私「♪～（少し弾いてみる）」

じいさん「それ、さっき弾いた曲と一緒！」

一同「いやいや、それはInis Oirrだよ。」

The old man: “Then, what’s next?”

Me: “I will play Inis Oirr.”

The guy: “What’s that? Inis Oirr? I don’t know it!”

Me: “♪〜(I played a few phrases)”

The man: “?! It is the same tune as the previous one!”

Everybody: “No way! IT IS INIS OIRR!”

じいさんがノってくれないため、違う曲を選んで弾いた。よく知らない曲が多くなってきた頃に、目の前のギネスもなくなってきたため次のパブへ移動。
The old man was unwilling to know Inis Oirr, I chose other tunes and played.  When I found I the tunes were becoming unfamiliar and I was about to reach the bottom of my glass of Guiness, we moved to another pub.


島の浜辺。空の色によって水の色が変わる。

そして、2軒目。
　アイルランド伝統音楽の全国大会Fleadh Cheoilで優勝したというフィドルを弾く女性がいるよ、と島に来てから聞いていたため、楽しみだった。23時近くなったパブには人がポツリポツリいるだけだった。
　部屋の隅に若い女性3人が時折談笑しながらそれぞれバンジョー、ギターそしてフィドルを囁き合うかのように鳴らしていた。繊細な糸のような3色の音が繋がり合う。うっとりするような甘い音色だった。
In the second pub:
   I was looking forward to listening to music there, because I had heard after coming to Inis Oirr that a lady fiddler, who had won the national Irish music championship, Fleadh Cheoil, would be in the pub. It was already around 11pm. There were only a few customers left.
   We found three young ladies in the corner of the room. They sometimes cheated and played the banjo, guitar and fiddle as if they had been whispering with each other. The sound from these instruments made harmony as three delicate yarns were tied. It was a sweet sounds, completely  entrancing.

囁き合うような柔らかい音楽。

バンジョーとフィドルを弾くのは、聞けば姉妹という。
だからなのか絶妙な息づかいで音を奏でている。
全く知らない者同士が不調和音を奏でるセッションもいいけれど、仲良し同士でおしゃべりをするかのように奏でるセッション。
この島でのアイリッシュ音楽はここに暮らすコミュニティーと共にあることを実感した。
The persons who were playing the banjo and fiddle were sisters. Probably that is why they play and breathe in such perfect timing. I like the session where strangers play and mix up different tunes, but it was impressive to find a session as if close friends or family were chatting with instruments. I figured out that Irish music on this island was living together with its community.

　翌日、ぶらぶらと島内散策していると、島で採れる材料を使って作った工芸品を売る店に辿り着いた。
蔓を編んでバスケットにしたり、村の高齢女性たちが編んだセーターなどがあった。
On the following day, I found myself in a small shop where an island lady was selling handcrafts made of natural materials from Inis Oirr. She sold some baskets made of vines, and sweaters knitted by old ladies living on the island.

地元の手工芸品を売る店。

店主の女性と話をして、今日が日本の海の日だと告げるとそんな祝日があることに驚いていた。
そこで日本にあるInis Oirr島と同じ規模の島との地域間交流ができたらおもしろいとか、
Inis Oirr島に住んでいた日本人ジミーさんの話とか、
毎日、新聞は来るけど貨物は週3日という物流の話とか
短時間だったけど色々と話した。
その中で、どれほど島での暮らしは不便だろうと仮定していたけど、
実際にはそんなに不便ではないと言われたことに驚いた。
病気になっても、島内の空港からヘリでGalwayの空港の屋上に直接行けるし、船ではなくても本島へは島民価格で飛行機にのって行けるし、それからやっぱみんながみんなのことを知っているからという安心感もあって、とのこと。
When chatting with the shop keeper, she was so surprised to know that day was Japanese marine national holiday. We talked a lot in a short time: it would be interesting if we could have local cultural exchanges between Inis Oirr and islands in Japan which have a similar size and population. Moreover, she told me about a Japanese guy who was residing on the island, Jimmy-San.  Also, she told me about her life here: she gets newspaper everyday, but cargo reaches only three times in a week.  I premised how hard it would be to live on the island, but I was surprised to hear that the life here was not inconvenient. If people get sick, they can take off at the airport and land on the rooftop in a hospital in Galway City. It seems they can also catch a flight with some discounts for island residents. Most importantly, she feels relief because everybody knows everybody.

 フェリーの時間が迫ってきた。またあの船旅に堪えないといけないかと思うと少しつらくなったが、帰りは酔い止めを飲んで動かない地平線に視点を一点集中し、瞑想の領域で揺られた。
やっぱり、すごい揺れ方だった。
The time to leave waas approaching steadily.  I was worrying about the ferry trip back to the island, as I had to bear the tough journey again. The ferry was going up and down a lot. I took medicine to prevent seasickness, and I stared at the unmovelable horizon as if I had been on a meditation like monks.
　
ようやくモハーの断崖付近の岩壁に映る黒く長い影が見えた頃、安堵した。
I felt relieved when I saw the black long shades reflecting rocky cliffs on the surface of the water around the Cliffs of Moher.

モハーの断崖が見えて来た。もうすぐ岸！

本島から見える白い砂浜のあるInis Oirr島は、真っ青の海に映えていた。
荒波や強烈な海風をものともせず、これからもずっとそこに浮かんでいるのだろうか。
The view from the main land overlooking Inis Oirr with a white beach was shining in the blue ocean.  I wondered  whether the island is going to be floating from now on as it used to do, regardless of wild sea and intense sea wind.

島で出会った人も牛もそしてそんな環境が奏でる音楽も、生き生きとそこに存在している。
People and cows I met on the island, and even Irish music played are all existing lively there at the same time.

やっぱり、島が好き。
I found again, that I like islands.


Inis Oirrの美しい海

アイルランド伝統音楽を学ぶ人たちへ

2013年夏にダブリンで見たRiverdanceのショーのフィドラーが衝撃すぎて私は翌年5月にフィドルを習い始めた。彼は、弾きながら跳ねていたんだもの。

 

それから5ヶ月後にミュージックスクールで月１回開催されているセッションに参加したのが人生初セッション。

 

アイリッシュ音楽は「Learn by ear（耳で学ぶ）」ことに重きが置かれ、レッスン後には楽譜がもらえるものの、「DGFGA次DG・・・!」というように音符が読まれるのを聞いて（ドレミファ・・・ではなく、アルファベット式なのに最初は戸惑った）弾いたり、セッションに行ってリズムを覚えて弾いたりする。

 

ミュージックスクールで習っているとは言うものの、やはり実践とはややかけ離れている。

だから、最初からせっかくセッションがいろんなところで行われているし、
できる限り（というかできなくても聴くだけでも！）セッションには行って、一緒に弾くようにしてきた。

 

以前、あるセッションで知り合ったアイルランド人のおばさんに尋ねてみた。

 

私「どこでフィドルを習っていますか」（どこかいい音楽学校の回答を期待）

おばさん「ここ（セッション）で習っているよ。家でも練習するけど、一番ここがいいわ。」

 

いやいや、冗談じゃない。
セッションは家での練習を試す場でしょう！
というのが私の中の当然な考えであったが、いきなり実践をすることでスキルを磨いているようだ。

そのほど、セッションに行くというのは必ずしも上手でなくていいし、
敷居なんて全くなくて、セッションを通じて学ぶところなのだ。

 

 

今回はアイリッシュ音楽を学ぶ人たち向けに私が通っているダブリン近郊にあるいくつかの割と入りやすい？セッションスポットについて書こうと思う。
勿論、演奏しない人でもぜひ一読して頂き、実際に足を運んで聴いて頂きたい。

 

ただ、まず最初に言えるのは試すのならダブリン市街地より郊外の方がいい。

ダブリン市街地のパブよりもやっぱり郊外の方が地域に根ざしたよりアイルランドらしい肩肘はらないセッションがそこにはあるから。
