勝手に私のthe best doughnut and browny in Irelandという称号をあげている。

Farm Market

A Life Full of Flowers

It has been ages since I updated my blog post.  Time flies unbelievably fast.
Now that summer has come here in Ireland (it is steadily around 20 degree, which is cool and comfortable).
Streets are full of joy and the smell of flowers is wonderful as there are loads of colourful fully bloomed flowers and hanging baskets around the town.

I visited a house in South Dublin today to participate in an event.
It was an old couples' house who were running a small family business.  Their business was in gardening, planting many kinds of herbs and keeping bees.
They grow hundreds of kinds of plants and sell them in restaurants around Co. Dublin.

They showed us two hives they were keeping.
Jack, who was a Jury's husband, talked about a bees' small world. There is only one Queen amongst 30.000- 40.000 bees.  Male bees usually remain in their hives, while female ones are working to get syrup from flowers.
The bee keeper, Jack, laughed and said, "it seems it's common in our world.  I mean, guys hang around their locals".  In bees' world, male bees finish their short lives in half a month.
When I was listening to the story of world of bees, a bee touched my right foot near my summery sandal.  A few seconds later, I had to scream because it stung my foot. Ouch! It was my first time to be attacked by a bee.
I was so panicked and asked Jack. "(If I was stung by bees several times in my life,) I will die, right??" Then he replied, "Don't worry.  It is this bee that will die soon, not you!! This bee may die soon, because it stung you."
What a fate...

After being harassed by the poor bee, we tasted nearly twenty kinds of edible flowers and herbs which were all harvested in the garden.

I had a lot of fun to see and taste herbs such as unique leaves that looked nothing special but once I chewed it, my mouth exploded with flavour.  And there was one particular yellow flower that tasted sour after first tasting bitter.

I think it's great that Jack and Judy can live a life where they grow their own wonderful food and herbs.  It's a kind of 'slow-food' life that I would like to live.  It adds more colour to their everyday lives.  From now on, I will introduce what I have been doing.

Last year a friend of mine gave me homegrown cherry tomatoes and I was impressed so much by the sweetness of them.  Early summer in June, I actually planted a few tomatoes with basil and leeks.  One of the tomatoes became ripe and I tasted it.  Ummm...it's not sweeter than the ones I got from my friend, but still sweeter than normal tomatoes in the supermarket!!

This year I spent my one-week-Easter-holiday in Serbia and Hungary.

To tell the truth, I had got a position in Serbia in March 2012 and was supposed to be working there at the moment.  I met my counterpart who the position instead of me for the first time, and I felt it’s a miracle that I’m now in another position in Ireland!! But what if I had really chosen to live there in Serbia…?
I'm wondering with whom I would have been working?  How would my life have been?  Life is always unpredictable: that’s why it’s so exciting!!

The capital, Belgrade, was stimulative.  I don’t know the exact words to describe it; it seemed like Europe, but the atmosphere overlapped with a more chaotic one I experienced in Sri Lanka.  In addition, when I looked up at the buildings bombed by NATO, I could almost believe the war time had just ended right then.

It sometimes appeared to me that some places looked like my image of Japan 40 or 50 years ago , while at the same time, modern cafes and restaurants were sitting on the streets.  The more wandered around the city, the more attractive it became.

Kaffein

One day, I hit the road to the countryside by car with my colleagues who were supposed to be my real bosses in Serbia. With their fantastic awesomeness, I could fully enjoy the taste of fantastic scenery in the countryside, such as a winery area called Fruska Gora, a small honey farm run by a family, and a monastery sitting at the foot of a hill.

It took me 8 hours and 10mins to reach my next destination: Budapest, Hungary.  The inside of the train was quaint enough that it would have been no surprise if Dementors from the film ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ had shown up.  In the middle of the night, a few border guards performed passport controls in the dark twice, with a one-hour interval.

The main purpose of the visit to Budapest was to reunite with my lovely Hungarian friend’s family for the first time in three years.  To be honest, the last three years were intense-ish, I mean, I tasted the sweet and bitter parts of life a bit.  However, even though we did not read those blank pages with each other, it was not hard at all for us to catch up and to get back on the same page, like three years ago.

As soon as I arrived at their place in a suburb of Budapest at 6am, we started to prepare for our Easter celebration.  Since they run a gingerbread business, they let me add colour and decorate them.  According to the rule on Easter Sunday, we were not allowed to have breakfast until 9.30am (though I was starving!).  Once the fast broke, I noticed that I had missed this happiness of dining with a family.
They kindly prepared some other Easter special programmes for me, which they usually do not do.  On Easter Monday, we searched for Easter eggs that a bunny had hidden in the garden; a guy (meaning her dad, as he is the only gent in her family) sprayed perfumes on the ladies in the early morning; we decorated several Easter eggs with wax which was a traditional method; and helped to bake Easter sweeties.

At the same time, we enjoyed walking around the old city fully.  Compared to my memories from three years ago, it looked like all buildings, buses, trams and the underground had been refurbished and were somehow brand-new.  My friend said, however, there had not been such huge changes.  Probably, it was due to my eyes which had already got used to the out-of-date buildings and buses in Serbia.

What I love in Budapest is...definitely the view from the hills!!

Through this splendid holiday, I felt how fantastic it was to mingle with local people living there whilst travelling the world.
“Traveling like living”-I believe it’s absolutely excellent - the best!!

St. Patrick's Day

(!!!ENGLISH VERSION!!!)
Last month I went to see a Japanese traditional drum performance at the National Concert Hall in Dublin.  A Japanese drum performers, Kodo, gave us an amazing concert there.  Kodo is an internationally known drum (taiko) performers.  They were formormed in the Sado Island in Niigata and now spend 1/3 of a year abroad.  This time they were on the European tour and came to Dublin for the first time in two years.

The main auditorium, where could accommodate 1200 people, was completely full.  Moreover, I was overwhelmed by the strong "heatbeat" of the drums.  Because they played so hard, I felt playing the drum could be even sports.  Maybe there will be a part of the events in coming Tokyo Olympic games in 2020?  Anyways, there were many different kinds of wonderful sessions: a session with smaller drums or with shakuhachi, a Japanese traditional wooden flute.  Especially, when two muscular guys played one big drum together, I was impressed so much because I felt the hearts of the audience became one. At the same time, the performers' sense of unity with the audience seemed to add even greater depth to their performance.

After the performance, not only I got a lot of positive impressions from Irish people, but I was asked so many questions about their performance such as:
What's the meaning of the lyrics in English the performers sang?  How did you interpret the name of the tour "Kodo: One Earth Tour" after the performance?  Did you see the story of the performance? These were really interesting but tough questions to answer, but I was glad to find that Irish people were really keen on them and tried to see the deep aspects of our culture.

Saunomaan Suomessa!!

Suomalaiset rakastavat saunomista.  Suomessa on monia saunoja.  Niitä löytää erimerkiksi kouluista, työpaikoilta ja kodeista.  Suomessa on yli kaksi miljoonaa saunaa.
Luulen, että he toivottivat meidät tervetulleiksi.  Sauna on parhaimmillaan, kun siellä on 80 astetta.  Minulla on kuitenkin tosi kuuma 15:ntoista minuutin jälkeen.  Silloin minun täytyy käydä ulkona vilvoittelemassa tai uida meressä tai järvessä.  Vaikka talvella onkin kylmä, teemme silti samoin.  Rakastan saunomista Suomessa!!
