Beyond the aka-region...☘: 花の溢れる暮らし/ A Life Full of Flowers

前回のブログポストからかなり間が空いてしまい時間の流れる早さには自分でもびっくりしている。
It has been ages since I updated my blog post. Time flies unbelievably fast.
さて、夏も真っ盛り？のアイルランド（と言いつつ気温は安定の20度もないくらい涼しく快適）。
6月ごろから街中は、花壇やハンギングバスケットの花々でほのかに花の香りがし、何とも街が文字通り華やいでいる。
Now that summer has come here in Ireland (it is steadily around 20 degree, which is cool and comfortable).
Streets are full of joy and the smell of flowers is wonderful as there are loads of colourful fully bloomed flowers and hanging baskets around the town.

今日はあるイベントで南ダブリンにある、あるお宅を訪問した。
ガーデニングを生業とし、食べられる草花や蜂を育てているご家庭。
I visited a house in South Dublin today to participate in an event.
It was an old couples' house who were running a small family business. Their business was in gardening, planting many kinds of herbs and keeping bees.
They grow hundreds of kinds of plants and sell them in restaurants around Co. Dublin.

数百種類もの植物を育てられており、ダブリン市内外のレストランにも卸しているという。

養蜂もしているというので、見せてもらった。
蜂の世界にもドラマがあるそうだ。3万から4万のミツバチの中に女王蜂はたったの1匹。
オス蜂は巣に残って、実際に蜜を取りに働くのはメス蜂の仕事。
「オス蜂は、のらりのらりと暮らすアイルランドの男と同じだな」と、養蜂家のジャック。
そんなオス蜂はたった半月ほどでその短い生涯を終えるという・・・
They showed us two hives they were keeping.
Jack, who was a Jury's husband, talked about a bees' small world. There is only one Queen amongst 30.000- 40.000 bees. Male bees usually remain in their hives, while female ones are working to get syrup from flowers.
The bee keeper, Jack, laughed and said, "it seems it's common in our world. I mean, guys hang around their locals". In bees' world, male bees finish their short lives in half a month.

そんな話に聞き入っていると、サンダルを履いていた私の足に１匹の蜂が止まった。
次の瞬間、「あ痛ててて.....！！ジャック、助けて！」by 私。
人生初めて、蜂に刺された！
慌てて「（蜂に何回か刺されると）私、死んでしまうよね？！」と聞くと、
「いや、大丈夫。死ぬのは、蜂の方だから。こいつもあんたを刺したから、もうじき死ぬね」と。
私を刺してくれた蜂の無常さよ。。。
When I was listening to the story of world of bees, a bee touched my right foot near my summery sandal. A few seconds later, I had to scream because it stung my foot. Ouch! It was my first time to be attacked by a bee.
I was so panicked and asked Jack. "(If I was stung by bees several times in my life,) I will die, right??" Then he replied, "Don't worry. It is this bee that will die soon, not you!! This bee may die soon, because it stung you."
What a fate...

全て、食べられる草花。どんな料理に合うかな！？

その後は、庭で採れたエディブルフラワーやハーブのテイスティング。

After being harassed by the poor bee, we tasted nearly twenty kinds of edible flowers and herbs which were all harvested in the garden.

単なる葉っぱなのに、噛めばジューシーさの溢れる不思議な葉や、

苦みの後に酸っぱさのくる黄色いお花（ナスタチウム？）、

数種類もあるオレガノなどなど、見るにも鮮やかで、味も楽しいひと時。

I had a lot of fun to see and taste herbs such as unique leaves that looked nothing special but once I chewed it, my mouth exploded with flavour. And there was one particular yellow flower that tasted sour after first tasting bitter.

やっぱりこうしてこだわって手間暇かけて日々の食卓に彩りを加えるスローフードっていいなと思う。ここからは、我が家での実践編。

I think it's great that Jack and Judy can live a life where they grow their own wonderful food and herbs. It's a kind of 'slow-food' life that I would like to live. It adds more colour to their everyday lives. From now on, I will introduce what I have been doing.

去年、知り合いに彼女の家で育てた完熟トマトを頂き、その甘さに感動した私。

今年こそは！と思って、6月にﾄﾏﾄの苗を購入し、ﾊﾞｼﾞﾙやネギと共に育てて2か月弱。

こんなに↓大きくなった！ﾄﾏﾄも先日赤くなり、元気すぎて？はち切れたやつを食べてみる。

あれ？やっぱその知り合いから頂いたﾄﾏﾄの甘味には叶わないけど、

スーパーで売っているのよりも断然甘かった！

Last year a friend of mine gave me homegrown cherry tomatoes and I was impressed so much by the sweetness of them. Early summer in June, I actually planted a few tomatoes with basil and leeks. One of the tomatoes became ripe and I tasted it. Ummm...it's not sweeter than the ones I got from my friend, but still sweeter than normal tomatoes in the supermarket!!
